Discrimination cases can arise in the course of employment (see our Employment Law section). The law also protects people from discrimination in relation to the provision of services, for example, a blind person refused entry to a restaurant because of a guide dog or gay men refused a room at a hotel, etc. The Equality Act also protects individuals from victimisation and harassment.
Howe+Co is currently bringing a compensation claim for a group of Irish Travellers and Gypsies claiming discrimination after being refused entry to a public house run by a national pub chain. Discrimination can result from the following “protected characteristics”:-

- Sexual orientation

- Marriage or Civil Partnership
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Gender reassignment
