Serving in the armed forces, whether in the Royal Navy, Army, or Royal Air Force, can be associated with significant noise exposure. This is often unavoidable, particularly for those on the front lines or jobs requiring prolonged exposure to high noise levels. Nonetheless, proper hearing protection can help mitigate this issue; unfortunately, suitable hearing protection is frequently either unavailable or ill-suited to the environments in which military personnel work.

Do you suffer from hearing loss due to your military service? You might be entitled to compensation.

Hearing loss and tinnitus (the ringing in the ears) are not guaranteed outcomes of military life. Like any employer, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) holds a responsibility to protect you from the risks of hearing damage, which includes providing appropriate ear protection against noise from:

  • Gunfire and artillery
  • Mortars
  • Explosions
  • Pyrotechnics
  • Aircraft noise
  • Vehicle engine noise

Do you suffer from hearing loss due to your military service? You might be entitled to compensation.

In the UK, approximately 300,000 ex-armed forces members are affected by noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and tinnitus. You might qualify for compensation if your hearing issues stem from long-term exposure to excessive noise during your service. You could still have a case even if you’ve been told before that you do not have hearing problems or have been denied payment under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) or War Pension schemes. These no-fault schemes come with rigid criteria, often resulting in lower compensation payouts.

Do you suffer from hearing loss due to your military service? You might be entitled to compensation.

Noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus resulting from military equipment can be debilitating and can impact many aspects of life, but they are preventable. Those within military communities have recognised this issue for many years; however, many who suffer choose to stay silent, often out of loyalty to their regiment or the MoD. They might feel a sense of personal responsibility for enlisting or be reluctant to acknowledge their hearing difficulties.  For more support on claiming for your injuries relating to military-induced deafness or Tinnitus, Contact Howe+Co Solicitors.
